I’m Mary Griffiths, Curator of Modern Art at the Whitworth where I look after the collection of modern and contemporary art and curate exhibitions. At the moment I’m working on an exhibition called “The Land Between Us” that opens 25 September 2010. The idea of the show is to take a new look at landscape art – thinking about its imagery, and the places and power associated with it. The exhibition will be about country and city, art of the past and of the present, and how meaning is found in those spaces between the works of art and us the viewers.
For the past few months I’ve had a thinking space in a tower room at the Manchester Museum, just down the road from the gallery. Through the bitter cold of the winter, I’ve been having a great time in that small room gathering together images and ideas for the exhibition, and discussing them with colleagues and artists.
