Turner and Black Audio Film Collective’s “Handsworth Songs”

The Whitworth has sixty watercolours by Turner – of the sea, the country, ruins, abbeys –  usually in Britain and sometimes in Europe. In the exhibition, most of these will be shown in relationship to Black Audio Film Collective’s 1986 film Handsworth Songs, which beautifully brings together the English landscape and the black and Asian experience of coming to Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, and the tensions that came to a head the 1980s.
